How we ranked
Only ready-to-drink bottles and cans qualify. Every flavor we have on record must state 0 mg caffeine. If caffeine is missing from a label, the product does not count as caffeine free. The rest are converted to one liter and scored on sodium and potassium.

- Ready-to-drink bottles and cans that list 0 mg caffeine for every flavor. The label must list calories, carbohydrate, sugars, sodium (above 0 mg) and potassium. We do not rank a product whose panel we could not read in full.
- How the score works
- Up to 70 points for sodium per liter as mixed, with full points at 920 mg/L, the middle of the typical sweat sodium range. Points fall in a straight line either side: half points at 230 and 1,610 mg/L, the ends of that range, and none at 2,300 mg/L or more. Up to 30 points for potassium per liter, with full points at 196 mg/L, the average potassium in sweat. Ties go to the product whose label lists more nutrients, then to the lower cost per 1,000 mg sodium. A product with no recorded price goes last in a tie.

What to look for in a caffeine-free sports drink
Check every flavor. Some brands add caffeine to one or two flavors or to a separate “energy” line. The same name on the bottle does not mean the same formula. We list each formula separately and check each flavor.
Sodium. Caffeine-free does not tell you anything about electrolytes. The sodium gauge under each product shows where it sits against typical sweat, 230 to 1,610 mg/L [1].
Sugar. Many caffeine-free sports drinks are full-sugar. If you want neither sugar nor caffeine, the sugar-free sports drinks list overlaps with this one.
FAQ
Do sports drinks have caffeine?
Most classic sports drinks do not. Some electrolyte and “energy” lines do, and a few brands add caffeine to single flavors. We record caffeine per flavor from the label. Every bottle on this list shows 0 mg for every flavor we have checked.
Which sports drinks are caffeine free?
The bottles ranked above are caffeine free in every flavor we have on record. Ranking is by sodium and potassium per liter. If you want powders too, the best electrolyte drink list covers every format, and each product page shows caffeine per flavor.
Does caffeine dehydrate you?
In moderate amounts, the evidence says no. The ACSM position stand concludes that caffeine will not markedly change daily urine output or hydration status, and that it is doubtful caffeine during exercise causes dehydration [6]. People avoid caffeine for other reasons, such as sleep or sensitivity.
Why is a drink I know missing from this list?
Either it is a powder rather than a bottle, or at least one flavor lists caffeine above 0 mg, or its label does not state caffeine. We only include products where every flavor passes. The drinks database lists every product we track with its caffeine by flavor.
