Sugar-free sports drinks, ranked by what the label says

The best sugar-free sports drinks pass the FDA sugar-free rule in every flavor and carry sodium near the middle of the typical sweat range, plus potassium. We check sugars against the limit of less than 0.5 g per serving [8], keep only bottles and cans, and rank the rest on electrolytes. Each entry lists its sweeteners.

On current label data the top three are BODYARMOR Flash I.V. Zero Sugar Electrolyte Drink (Ready to Drink), POWERADE Power Water and Gatorlyte Zero Sugar.

How we ranked

A bottle qualifies only if every flavor we have on record lists sugars and passes the sugar-free test. A drink with no sodium on the label is left out. The rest are converted to one liter and scored on sodium and potassium.

Who qualifies
Ready-to-drink bottles and cans with less than 0.5 g sugars per serving and per 360 mL, the FDA sugar-free rule, in every flavor. The label must list calories, carbohydrate, sugars, sodium (above 0 mg) and potassium. We do not rank a product whose panel we could not read in full.
How the score works
Up to 70 points for sodium per liter as mixed, with full points at 920 mg/L, the middle of the typical sweat sodium range. Points fall in a straight line either side: half points at 230 and 1,610 mg/L, the ends of that range, and none at 2,300 mg/L or more. Up to 30 points for potassium per liter, with full points at 196 mg/L, the average potassium in sweat. Ties go to the product whose label lists more nutrients, then to the lower cost per 1,000 mg sodium. A product with no recorded price goes last in a tie.

Scores use label data and published reference values only. Affiliate links and commission play no part. Read the full methodology.

What to look for in a sugar-free sports drink

Sodium. Zero-sugar versions of classic sports drinks usually keep the original sodium, which is below most sweat. Sweat usually carries 230 to 1,610 mg/L [1]. The gauge on each product shows how close it gets.

The sweetener. Without sugar, the sweetness has to come from somewhere. Many zero-sugar bottles use sucralose and acesulfame potassium; some use stevia. Each product lists what its label says.

No fuel. A sugar-free drink gives you electrolytes and fluid but no carbohydrate. That suits short sessions and daily drinking. For long sessions, see the carbs per hour guide.

Few bottles qualify. The list is short because few ready-to-drink bottles pass the rule in every flavor. Powders give more choice: see the sugar-free electrolyte drink mix list.

FAQ

What sports drinks have no sugar?

The bottles above all pass the FDA sugar-free rule, less than 0.5 g of sugars per serving and per reference amount, in every flavor we have checked [8]. Labels show this as 0 g sugar. A zero-sugar version of a brand’s drink is usually a separate formula, so it gets its own entry.

Are zero-sugar sports drinks bad for you?

We rank label contents, not health effects. Zero-sugar sports drinks swap sugar for non-sugar sweeteners, and each product above lists which ones. Whether that trade suits you is a personal call. If you prefer to avoid synthetic sweeteners, the no artificial sweeteners list filters them out.

Do sugar-free sports drinks still have electrolytes?

Yes, but amounts vary a lot. Most keep the sodium and potassium of their sugared versions. A few add more. The sodium column in the table shows each drink per liter, so you can compare them with each other and with the typical sweat range of 230 to 1,610 mg/L.

What is the difference between sugar free and zero calorie?

“Sugar free” limits sugars to under 0.5 g per serving. “Calorie free” limits calories to under 5 kcal per serving [8]. A drink can meet one rule and miss the other. The low-calorie sports drinks list uses the FDA calorie rules instead of the sugar rule.
